Spring 2012 Raptor Nesting Closures
As of March 1st, Falcon nesting closures have been issued by the Cleveland National Forest at Corte Madera and Eagle Peak. The good news is that there's still plenty of open rock to climb at each crag. Read on to learn exactly which areas are closed and where you can still climb.
CNF Closure Order
Peregrine Falcons have been observed exhibiting courtship behavior by climbers visiting the area, and have been flying in and out of the usual nest site at Corte Madera. Based on nesting activity over the last few years and the activity seen this year, all routes West of, and including the "South Buttress" route are closed through July 31st (unless it is confirmed that nesting activity is NOT occurring at the site).
From March 1st through July 31st, 2012, please do not enter the yellow shaded area, including the "South Buttress" route and all routes to the West.
It is presumed at this point that the nesting at Eagle Peak this year will be the same as the last couple of years. To ensure the resident falcon pairs have a chance to select a nest site, the entire Summit area and the Main Wall including all routes to the West of the Direct Route are closed as of March 1st. See the image below for details.
