Action Alert: Williamson Rock Proposal
The Angeles National Forest has released what is known as a scoping letter as a preparatory step to an Environmental Assessment regarding the potential reopening of the Williamson Rock climbing area. Your comments are needed...
The Forest Service released the scoping letter on December 18th, 2013 and comments must be submitted via mail or email no later than January 24, 2014.
Proposed actions include:
- Permanent and/or seasonal closures of some areas
- Construction of a new access trail and signage
- Construction of a bridge and restroom facilities
ACSD has prepared a comment letter directly to the Forest Service, but individual comments are important as well. Our letter is available here for reference, but please also reference the following bullet points regarding our stance on the subjects.

Although we wrote a letter representing the climbing community, it is important that you, as a climber interested in this issue, voice your opinion as well. There truly is strength in numbers and the more letters they receive, the better.
Here are some recommended Bullet Points for Letter Writing:
1.) Implement long-term and seasonal closures
o ACSD opposes a large, fixed seasonal closure for nesting raptors
§ Seasonal nesting protections should be limited to State/Federal, or otherwise legally protected species.
§ Closures should include only the area required to protect the nesting raptors, based on species, topography, and viewshed from the nest site.
§ Closures should be limited in duration and flexible, based on active monitoring for nest activity.
o ACSD opposes any permanent or seasonal closure for the MYLF that is not limited to the immediate streambed area.
o ACSD supports the closure of the streambed area and streambed-based climbing routes
2.) Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail Bridge
o ACSD supports the proposed construction of a bridge across the creek.
3.) Establish limited access to Williamson Rock, while installing public amenities for resource protection
o ACSD supports the proposed trail system from the Kratka Ridge parking area, toilet installations, and informational kiosks and signage.
Please take the time to provide some detailed, personal comments. Be sure to include:
- Your name, address, telephone number, and e-mail address;
- Title of the project (Williamson Rock); and
- Comments, along with supporting reasons, that you believe the Forest Service should consider in evaluating the proposal.
